Description

The tropical evergreen tree (Myristica Fragrans), produces both the spice, nutmeg and mace. Nutmeg is the seed kernel found inside the fruit (nutmeg apple), while mace is the lacy covering on the kernel. The tree is native to the Moluccas, or Spice Islands, of Indonesia. Nutmeg trees are usually propagated through seeds. Monsoons are the most ideal plating season. These trees flower throughout the year.

Nutmeg trees may reach a height of about 20 metres. They yield fruit eight years after sowing, reach their prime in 25 years, and bear fruit for 60 years or longer. The major nutmeg growing areas are Indonesia and Granada. It also grows on a smaller scale in Sri Lanka, India, China, Malaysia, Zanzibar, Mauritius and Solomon Island.
