Description

Turmeric also known as the Golden spice, Wonder spice or Indian saffron is basically a dried rhizome that comes from the root of the plant, Curcuma Longa, of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. The plant is a herbaceous perennial, 60-90 cm high, with a short stem and tufted leaf. Externally, the rhizomes are yellowish brown, while the internal surface is orange in color. Curcumin is a major and most active component of turmeric which gives it, its yellow color.

The plant is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It grows in a temperature range of 20 to 30° C and can be harvested within 7 to 9 months after sowing, depending on the variety and normal circumstances. When the leaves and stem start turning brown and dry up progressively, it is an indication that it is ready for harvest.
